Abstract

Sediment characteristic was examined in Sulawesi Sea trench, core STA12 (120o06.555’ E, 02o00.911’ N, water depth 4820 m). This core was analyzed using megascopic observation and physical properties measurement i.e. magnetic susceptibility, color change, P-Wave velocity, and chemical elements using Multi-Sensor Core Logger (MSCL). The darker sediments located at the depth of 70-100 cm and 135-195 cm was alternated by the brighter sediment in between their darker sediments. The darker sediments posses the physical properties i.e. low L* value, high magnetic susceptibility, low normalized ratio of (K/Ca), and high P-wave velocity. The occurrence of terrestrial elements (Ti, Fe, K, and Mn) indicates low characteristic in the darker sediments. In contrast, the brighter sediments show the physical properties i.e. high L* value, low magnetic susceptibility, high normalized ratio of (K/Ca), and low P-wave velocity as well as higher characteristic of terrestrial elements. The sediment characteristic at core STA12 is supposed due to the amount of terrestrial input from Kalimantan and Philippine. Besides, the Indonesian throughflow (ITF) passed the location core STA12 may influence the sediment characteristic in this area.
